Vegan Cities: The Amsterdam Guide

Amsterdam is definitely up there with being one of the best cities on earth, this was my 3rd visit & my 1st being Vegan and it just confirmed to me how incredible this place is, these guys have got easy pleasurable living down to a fine art. The city itself is beautiful to walk around with its quirky houses, cool canals, bike routes galore (the city has more bikes than humans which gives way to entertaining sights when you witness the competitive amounts of things people try to hold whilst cycling through the streets) , central parks & a hoard of fantastic places to eat & explore – a plant lovers paradise where you can eat plants, smoke plants & buy plants you’ve probably never seen before in your life. Before I left I did a quick wee research of Vegan haunts around town & discovered a heap of amazing places to check out. Amsterdam’s Vegan scene is taking off with a bunch of new places just opened up in the past year that are quickly gaining status amongst the scene including a few that are now Winners at this years Vegan Awards 2017. So here is a quick peak at some of the places I had the pleasure of feasting at & would highly recommend if you make it over to ‘The Dam’.

Juice By Nature

Warmoesstraat 108, Red Light District  @juicebynature
Opening hours :  Monday – Friday 9m – 8pm Sat & Sun 10am-8pm

Juice by nature

Juice by Nature is located smack bang on one of the busiest streets in ‘Centrum’ just a few minutes away from Central Station, when you walk in it’s like an oasis of calm with its cool fresh décor & boho vibes. The staff are super friendly & they serve up a delicious range of healthy juices such as Easy Greens, Beet Treat, Ginger Glow, Citrus Lush + In The Pink as well as a bunch of different food options including Buddha bowls, smashed avo toast & breakfast pots. They offer a wide range of drinks including smoothies, shots & hot drinks which you can have with a range of different mylks. Just a tiny warning, this place is almost completely vegan but does have a few non-vegan options on the menu for vegetarians/carnivores so when it says cheese it means it. Would highly recommend this place when you’re in need of a good juice boost & a wee break from the hustle & bustle.

vegan junk food bar

I cannot rave about this place enough, it is out of this world incredible! It’s one of those vegan places that reminds you not only are you not missing out on anything being vegan, but you are now eating the best food of your life! The food here is insane. They serve up a short but sweet menu including burgers such as the VJFB original & the Notorious Sumo Burger -double plant-based beef, cheddar, fried onion rings, lettuce, tomato, red, spring & fried onion mix, pickles, jalapeños, VJFB sauce. The specials include Blue Corn Chik’n Tortilla &’Wish & Chips’ as well as a heap of tasty Fries & Sides, Desserts such as the Pink Oreo Cupcake & some outstanding cocktails such as the I Love Lychee – vodka, lychee juice, grenadine. The general vibe of Vegan Junk Food Bar is that it’s a straight up funky place to hang out & eat great food, it has graffiti everywhere with tags such as #GoVeganOrGoHome & the staff are really friendly & helpful.  These guys opened their doors earlier this year and now have 2 stores, 1 in Oud-West & the 2nd at Marie Heinekenplein with also now offers a Gluten Free menu. This place definitely shouldn’t be missed on your trip.

The Avocado Show

Daniël Stalpertstraat 61, De Pijp  @theavocadoshow
Opening Hours :   Monday – Sunday 9am – 5pm

avo show

The Avocado Show – just hearing the name gets most avocado lovers hearts pumping with excitement & Yes, it is as good as it sounds!  It’s exactly what it says in the name, a café dedicated to all things avocado which ranges from Avocado Burgers, Avocado Toast to Avocado Ice-cream & Avocado Daquiris if you want to go that far! This place serves Instagram worthy wonders & whilst not being strictly vegan but has vegan options (in their own words they cater to flexitarians, vegetarians, vegans, pescatarians & Martians) their menu will not disappoint. This place is unbelievably popular with a queue out the door & a lady standing with a waiting list which lasted 1 hour so I suggest getting here as early as you can.

Vegabond

Leliegracht 16, Centrum ( Canal Ring) @vegabondfood
Opening Hours :  Mon – Fri 9am-7pm,  Sat 10am-7pm &  Sun 11am-6pm

vegabond

Vegabond is a vegan lunchroom & grocery store which is located right on the Leliegracht Canal so is a lovely place to sit & relax for lunch or just a quick coffee. The place itself is a bright open space with a huge window overlooking the canal & has outside seating also. The staff are super lovely & you can buy things like bamboo toothbrushes, vegan cookbooks, body scrubs & all sorts of vegan cheeses. Their menu includes things such as overnight oats, acai bowls, tofu sausage rolls, vegan donuts & banana bread & also has fresh juices & smoothies such as the Powerful Peanut – rice coconut milk, banana, peanuts, dates & spinach. I would recommend this place if you feel like taking a break or reading a book for a while, or just enjoy having a wee nose about at the vegan goods on offer.

Meatless District

Bilderdijkstraat 65-67,Amsterdam West @meatless_district
Opening hours : Mon – Fri 12pm-11pm , Sat & Sun 10am – 11pm

meatless

Meatless District is a vegan restaurant located in Amsterdam West & is 1 classy lassy of a place! It just won an award for being the ‘Best Vegan Restaurant’ in Amsterdam at this years Vegan Awards and for good reason. This place is stylish in food & decor, and the menu (which changes every 3 months) is filled with eye opening goodies such as the treat I tried called ‘Summer Smash Sandwich’ – spelt toast with smashed avocado, green asparagus, strawberries, red onion, mint, truffle oil & balsamic vinegar. During the week they serve lunch from 12pm-4pm & Dinner from 6pm-10pm with Breakfast served on the weekends from 10am-12pm. Breakfast includes items such as vegan French toast, BLT’s & bagels along with a range of juices & hot drinks. The Lunch & Dinner menu boasts things such as delicious noodle or rainbow bowls, vegan quiche, burgers, risotto & jackfruit pie as well as Vegan Crème Brulee for desert, all of which can be enjoyed with a cocktail or a nice glass of wine. Highly Recommend.

Wok to Walk

Leidsestraat 96, Grachtengordel @woktowalk
Opening hours : Monday – Sunday 11am – 3am ( open til 4am on Fri & Sat )

wok to walk

Wok to Walk is a chain of stir fry joints in Amsterdam that are hugely popular, with 3 locations in the city centre that are open until 3am where it seems business never stops. They serve food to all dietary needs, so you just have to select the vegan ones that you want on the menu. The menu is basically a DIY of pick what you want, with it being divided into 3 sections of 1. Base – noodles, rice or vegetables, 2. Mains – e.g., Tofu, Pak Choi, Broccoli, Pineapple, Cashews etc 3. Sauce & 4. Toppings. I ended up going here every day I was in Amsterdam simply because the stir fry’s were some of the best I’ve had! Its fast & easy to just grab on the go & absolutely delicious! I would recommend a stir fry with udon noodles, veg & beansprouts, Pak choi, pineapple, peanuts, coriander, fried onions & hot sauce. It’s unreal.
